"I looked several months for the right 2007-2009 Subaru Outback, so I was very aware of the type of maintenance items that I should be concerned about, specific features I was looking for, and where the pricing should be for the region. I watched dealerships throughout ALL of New England so that when the $$$ was ready, I could leap. Southern Auto and John Lundgren had great reviews on line. It looked like the cars were nice and well prepared for resale. I contacted him via email about a 2009, but it had just sold. He told me he had 2 more that he was getting ready. One 2008 specifically matched the colors I wanted, he suggested I call him to make arrangements. After speaking with him I felt confident that he was a reputable dealer and someone I could buy a car from. (I had looked at many nice cars, but walked away from a couple due to rude salespeople, or just a bad feeling.) I made plans to make the 1 hour drive from my house, but then John contacted me and told me that while the car was fine and could be sold the way it was, that he had decided to the replace timing belt, water pump and head gasket to ensure that there were no problems after the sale. He also put new brakes, as well as some other minor items. He did raise the price a bit for the extra work, but told me in advance, and I agreed it was a fair adjustment. Well once I finally got there, I drove the car, and brought it home that day. I have since put about 500 miles on it and I love it. It drives beautifully, and looks nice. It's a great used Subaru with 88000 miles. If you are looking for a great reputable young dealer who is interested in growing his business, not just making a buck off you with a clunker, I suggest you check out Southern Auto while you are shopping. Especially if you are looking at Subarus as they seem to be John's specialty. Thanks John, great car."

"I never take the time to write reviews unless I have a terrible experience but I was so impressed with this dealer I had to make an exception. I wish all dealers were like this one. They have a huge amount of pictures available on the website with free Carfax reports, a unique description listing all service completed so you have a very good idea of what to expect. When you arrive at the dealership the general manager John deals directly with you so there's no salesman go-between. It's a very casual experience. He simply gave me the keys and asked if I had any up-front questions and since I didn't he just said take as much time as you want to check the car over. This is in stark contrast to other dealers who would hover over you which makes it stressful. I was amazed to find that even the least expensive vehicles had folders inside the vehicle with full market pricing analysis from several sources such as KBB, NADA, etc. plus full service history. Every vehicle also has a window sticker which clearly displays all of the details of the vehicle and the out the door price. Speaking about pricing this dealer is very aggressive with their pricing so for the first time when buying a car I didn't feel like I needed to engage in stressful negotiations to get a great deal. Plus they are probably the only dealer I know that does not charge any extra fees whatsoever. They do offer to handle the insurance and registration for you so you can avoid the RMV for a very reasonable $49 fee but it's completely optional and in my case was well worth it. Everything they sell comes with a warranty and if you bring it to your own mechanic after you buy it and there's anything that was missed it's covered at no cost. The car that I bought from them was taken to my mechanic who is very stringent but in this case he reports that the car is in excellent mechanical shape and couldn't find any faults. This was a perfect experience and I wish there were more dealers like this out there so I figured I would do my part by spreading the word. I would not hesitate to send my grandmother to these guys, they are great and everything a car dealer should be."

"We had a great experience at Southern Auto Sales. Not even a trace of the old-school gimmicks or surprise charges; just straightforward, honest, and pleasant to deal with. We're very happy with the Subaru we bought. There were a couple minor concerns we had about it after the sale, and they went above and beyond to address them quickly and professionally. They seem just as interested in maintaining post-sale satisfaction as in the sale itself. Definitely recommend, and we'll be back when we next need a reliable car at a fair price."

"My wife and I purchased a Subaru here and it was quite honestly the best experience we've ever had at a car dealership. Normally we HATE car shopping, but John (the general manager) made us feel more comfortable than we've ever felt at any dealership. It's the first time I've ever heard my wife say she likes a sales guy. He was professional but in that laid-back manner that makes you feel like you're talking to your best friend. The cars here are all very clean and the Carfax reports are actually left in every car so you don't even have to ask! Straightforward prices are clearly marked on every car with no huge mark ups so negotiating a price took less than 30 seconds. He is also the only dealer I know who doesn't charge ANY fees! We were used to paying $300-$600 for 'documentation' fees, but John told us he has never and will never charge any fees and we hope he's right because our next car will definitely be from Southern Auto Sales!"

"After searching for a couple months for a reliable Subaru, we came across a Southern Auto post and drove more than an hour to get there. We were glad we did! We couldn't have asked for a better experience. These guys are exceptional business owners and car salesman and it was great dealing with them. You didn't leave feeling taken advantage of, you left feeling like you learned something and were lucky to find this spot. They have a 30 day warranty on their cars. When a light went on for a rear wheel sensor they sent off for the part right away and fixed it with no charge to us. We've driven it another 30,000 miles and no issues at all. I highly recommend anyone check this place for a fair deal and excellent car. Southern Auto stands by their word and they have the charm of a small family business. Thank you John!"

"For anyone interested in buying a Subaru (and after this winter, you'd be crazy not to drive one!), Southern Auto Sales is a great place to get a used Subaru. I bought an LL Bean 30th-anniversary Legacy Outback in Nov. 2014 from John, who runs the place. Great car, great price, exactly as described. But I just had a spin-out on the highway (not the car's fault) and knew I could come back to John at Southern for my replacement. So now I have a 2005 Forester. To compensate for its relative age, their in-house Subaru mechanic (with 20 years experience) has already replaced the head gasket, timing belt, and all fluids. The car comes with a 30 day/10,000 mile warranty. John has great connections for finding parts and accessories, and will usually get things in himself and pass them on to you much cheaper than retail. He knows an amazing amount about these cars, and even better, is a no BS car salesman. No extra fees, no 'document fees', he makes sure that what you see is what you get. As a single woman, this is such a relief. This was my first repeat sale but I'm pretty sure I'll be back when I next need a car, and have already recommended him to friends. If you want a used Subaru, you can't do better."

"I normally don't write reviews online but this dealer deserves a 5-star rating and I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a hassle-free way to buy a quality vehicle. John runs the place and provides a very casual atmosphere with absolutely no trace of the typical games or gimmicks. "Just bought a Subaru from John. We travelled from an hour away and gave John a time we would be there, he told us he would not show the car until we had a chance to see it. He was a man of his word, when we arrived another couple was there to look at same vehicle and was very interested. John nicely explained to them that we had emailed and had appointment to come in and have 1st look at car. He could have sold the car to them, but kept his word and showed us first. What a pleasant surprise to deal with someone who is knowledgeable and honest about the cars. He gives you all the information about the cars, test drive them and then he does NOT pressure you. "There's a reason used car dealers have a horrible reputation...they're usually dishonest and sleazy.  Thankfully, there are a handful of them out there who have a soul and actually care about their customers. John and the rest of the team at Southern Auto treated me like a person and worked hard to find a car that was right for me. 

I called in asking about a Subaru that was slightly out of my price range, hoping they would come down on the price, they wouldn't (which was understandable since it was fairly priced). But 24 hours later, John called me back recommending that I test drive a similar car in my price range that was a year older. He was very upfront with me, making sure I understood the vehicle's history. I decided it was the right car and began the process of acquiring a loan from my bank. John was very helpful in getting me the paperwork and was always available when I needed something emailed.

"I bought my beautiful, pure white 2007 Subaru Forester from Southern Auto Sales in March. The price was great, so I held my breath when I first got it inspected at a Subaru dealership. Turns out, it needed NOTHING! I was so pleased with my purchase! I'm a difficult shopper, I can ask alot of questions and make a lot of "demands"...I love to negotiate. I must say, the owner's son, who sold me the car, was very patient with my attitude and didn't react with any attitude of his own. 5 stars just for dealing with a stressed-out car purchaser!!! In the aftermath of buying the car (who I refer to as Snow White), I had questions about this and that- it was my first Subaru and I didn't want to do anything wrong. Basically, all my calls were answered and questions addressed. Very polite, up-front and a great selection of Subarus. All gorgeous. "Used car shopping is one of those universally despised experiences, like going to the dentist. Most people absolutely dread it; I suspect that this is partially due to the fact that it's hard to settle on something when you've got a limited budget, but mostly, it's because of the bad rep most used car lots have! I'm pretty good at car shopping, and personally, I feel more comfortable buying used. I follow a few simple principals that I've picked up over the years: 1. Never spend your entire budget. 2. Always take the car to a mechanic independent of the person or dealership 3. Go to the lot with a pretty clear idea of what you want. If you haven't ruled out all the other options, you don't know what you want! 4. Resources like Consumer Reports keep a ton of records on reliability, and can lean you towards something in your price range with other specs in mind 5. Don't allow anyone to rush you, or to pressure you! There will always be another car. When we moved to New England, we knew we wanted to find a Subaru for my husband. They're reliable, they've got AWD, the gas mileage isn't terrible... easy right? Actually, it was! We saw Southern Auto online, they had a least a dozen Subarus under 10K. We didn't know what to expect from a small lot, especially after a rather unpleasant trip to Quirk, so we were pleasantly surprised by how awesome John is! We had a zero pressure experience at Southern Auto! John showed us the inventory he had, offered us options, time, whatever we needed. We actually ended up being the first car we drove, and when we took it for an inspection, our mechanic found it to be in great condition, as promised. I love that this business is family owned! These are nice people, selling inexpensive used cars to people who need them- basically everything that a local auto lot should be. Oh, and they have a dachshund on staff! (He's worth at least an extra star to me!!)"
